Reading habits
In a way to learn more about each other, why not talk about our reading habits!

When do you prefer to read?
Where?
Do you put music on?
Do you prefer a physical book or an e-reader?

(if you like this kind of post, let me know! I have other ideas ;-) )

I love this kind of post!

I mostly prefer to read in bed. It's my 'relaxing' time at the end of the day. Hubby goes to bed quite early as he has to be up at 5.30 for work, so I try and at least go to bed at the same time even if he goes to sleep and I read for a couple of hours... or longer! I seldom have music on as I don't want to keep him awake and I can't stand wearing earphones. I don't mind a physical book or e-reader but I tend to read more on my tablet so I can havethe lights out and he can sleep. Having a physical book means having the bedside lamp on. He says he doesn't mind, but I try not to do it. I do like to vary it though and buy/read some physical books from time to time.

I would love to read in bed but any little light bothers hubby. Grrr...

Yeah hubby says it doesn't bother him but I try to keep the brightness down and turn it slightly away from him.

LOL I've been lucky to have the best of both. Hubby was in the military for 25 years so regular detachments meant I had the bed to myself!

I read sitting on the living room couch. It's right by the radiator which is nice in this chilly weather. If a book has grabbed me, I usually can't put it down. I can read with music or the television on but prefer silence and I like turning pages.

Oh yeah! If I don't read in bed, the couch next to the radiator would be my second best place!

I read whenever the mood strikes, but I prefer curling up in bed in the evening or on rainy afternoons. I don't generally read with background music or noise. I refuse to touch e-readers - physical books all the way for me! But I do occasionally read ebooks on my laptop if I can't get them in physical form. Sadly, this is becoming more and more common as our library has started refusing to bother with physical copies. It makes me sad :(

Oh that’s terrible that your library seems to be phasing out physical copies. :( My library has any physical book imaginable but has also provided us with a service called Hoopla for ebooks if we want them. It’s the best of both worlds.

Yeah, it really makes me sad. They have a limited budget, and they've been spending a lot of money on new tech then fobbing us off with cheap ebooks which, for me, are actually quite unpleasant to read, not to mention not my thing to begin with (...I swear, they must pick up the cheap or free ebooks from BookBub or something because there are sO MANY weird mermaid romances I don't even??? Like, I know YKINMK but come on. They also have loads of Christian books and only a handful of LGBT lit, which. Some diversity, please...). Your library sounds much preferable by comparison!

LOL @ mermaid romances. That would suck. I am really lucky with our library district. We have about ten libraries in our district which makes it better for funding. I come from a very small rural town but since we have bigger (and even smaller) communities part of our district, we get a lot of nice stuff. We also have inter-loan where we can get books from any large city in the surrounding areas so I don’t think there has ever been a book that I wasn’t able to get my hands on in one way or another through my library. I am really active with our library in fundraiser, etc., because I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to it! It’s such a good thing for our community.

Ahh, that sounds nice. I moved here a couple of years ago from a place with a much better library, so it's doubly disappointing lol. Still, I will say this for them: they're really good about getting audiobooks and ebooks of things if you request them. Just...not so good with actual physical book things. And a little too fond of mermaids.

I prefer to read at night but since I can no longer split my attention, I usually binge read whenever we have a powercut and the TV isn't on (I can get through almost an entire book when we have no power *LOL*)

The where is normally my big comfy chair in the front room (I used to be able to read in bed but I can't get comfy enough now :/)
Altho...I have been known to pick up a book to look at and end up standing in my room reading the first four or five chapters before I even realise I'm doing it *LOl*

I hate to say it but I find music terribly distracting when I'm reading O_O
I like the room to be quiet, no distractions, so I can fully concentrate on what I'm reading :)

I'm 50/50 on real vs e-reader, I use whichever is convenient at the time? During the day, a real book is fine. But at night I have to go with e-reader because there is no light to read by in the front room.

I love this kind of post! Please feel free to post more like it! It’s really getting the discussions going!

My absolute favorite place to read is in the car (when someone else is driving of course). This is actually where my love of reading started. My family was big on Sunday drives when I was little and I HATED them until I started taking books with me. Reading a book while my parents aimlessly drove around the countryside was the only way to tolerate those drives. LOL Now when we go on long drives I always take a book. Sometimes it bothers my husband but he will throw on the radio and is usually fine or talks to my daughter who loves to look around like he does. My son has his face buried in a video game but I can’t blame him because he’s like me and hates long drives. Unfortunately I did not pass my love of reading for pleasure on to either kids. :(

At home, I read in my living room in my comfy chair and I am not one that has a problem with tv or music. I actually prefer the tv on for some reason. My kids do get mad at me though because if they come to talk to me and I’m reading I don’t pay any attention. I get so involved in my book and I can tune out so easily that i don’t know they are talking. They need to say MOM and then wait for me to look up if they want my attention. LOL

I am torn between books and e-readers. I have an iPad and the lighting in my house is low so I like to read on that at night but there is still nothing that can replace the feel of a real book.

It's fun because long ride was what got me addicted to video games! ;-) I received my first game boy as a way to make me endure the long car journeys! ;-)

Though, I was reading, too! But I had this very annoying habit of reading all the road signs aloud so...

That’s awesome! My son started with the game boy when he was little but now has his DS XL or whatever it is. He hated car rides so I let him play it. No reason to make him miserable because I remember being miserable with the rides. The only thing we never allowed them in the car was a DVD player. They can watch movies at home. :)

We never had a car when I was little and the few cars I did travel in I couldn't read because I got motion sickness. I could read on a coach, plane or train but not in a car.

I know a lot of people who have trouble reading in a car because of the motion. Cars are a bit more jerky than trains or planes so that is understandable.

Oh! I'm glad to see all these answer! My turn now!

When I was younger, I was an avid reader, able to read everywhere and all the time... Sadly, it's not the case anymore. I mostly read at night, in my bed and in silence! If I have a long journey by bus or train, I can read there, too. Then, I often put some music on to shelter myself from the noises around, though.

I love books. I have quite a collection and I love buying more but in bed, the e-reader is quite practical so for me it will depend if I want the book in my collection or not.

I too love books and had quite a collection but a house move forced us to 'downsize' our bookcases and we got rid of about 75% of them. I regret it to this day.

I've recently refurbished all my bedroom and with the new bookshelves I have more room than before! It's quite exhilarating to see void that need to be filled with more books! ;-)

I really enjoy this sort of post :)

I find I'm more on the mood to read when it's rainy or on cloudy days and at night.
I read wherever I find a good spot: the corner of the couch, my bed, the car, on the grass, etc.
I've ocassionally put on instrumental music, but I prefer to focus on the book. I need to use all my concentration when I read, otherwise it might take me weeks to finish.
Physical books, though I have several books stored in my iPad, it's easier when I travel or I'm out of the house, I've lost books before, like I'd left them on the bus. I can be a total scatterbrain. And sometimes it's less difficult to find the epub version than the physical.

Great idea for a post!

I prefer to do most of my reading over the weekends or on days when I don't have to work the next day for the simple reason that I have a hard time stopping when I need to go to bed. I've often time stayed up way too late because I need to finish a chapter or I simply must find out what happens next. As for where, I like reading in bed the most. I sometimes want music or tv in the background, sometimes not...just depends on my mood. I like physical books the best, but also enjoy ebooks. I also have come to really enjoy audiobooks.

I have the same trouble if it's a really good book. Just a few more pages, just one more chapter, just a bit more.... then before I know it, it's 3am and I am still awake. Or so wrung out over a sad part I can't sleep. I am trying really hard to limit myself at night and makes sure I put my book/tablet away by 1am!
