Post January check-in...
We're one month into the 2018 bingo game, and I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a post where we could discuss our progress among other things.

So, like...

Have you filled any squares? If so, which ones? What books are you looking forward to reading in the coming months? Need any recs to fill a particular square? Have any recs to others? Things like that. I'm hoping this will be a monthly thing. I'm going to attempt it anyway, and hope real life doesn't intrude too much.

For me, I finished four books, and got halfway through a fifth. All of them are spread out on the board, so I'm still nowhere near a bingo yet. I'm also excited because I book a pre-ordered in Decemeber arrived in the mail on Tuesday. It's called Arrow: Fatal Legacies, and it's supposed to bridge the gap between the show's 5th and 6th seasons. I'm planning on using it for the "Published this year" square, through there's a new Flash tie-in novel that's set to come out in a few months, so I may end up using that one instead.

I used to watch the Flash and I have read fanfic for the show but I have never read any of the books. How do you like them?

I read 14 books in January (though 6 of them were audiobooks and 1 was technically a short story), and filled 3 squares. I'm excited for so many books that I'm struggling to keep myself from trying to read them all at the same time, haha...but I narrowed down the books I'm most excited about and decided to read Roots of Coincidence by Arthur Koestler next to fill the "Non-Fiction" square. I'm currently reading 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade because it's been "at or near the bottom of my TBR pile" for ages!

That's fantastic! :D

I definitely understand that! Not a bad problem to have, though.

14 books that is very awesome! I also listen to audiobooks. Mostly in the car because at times that seems to be the only time I have to read. Although right now I am in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to them, I haven't found any that have peaked my interest. :D

I've filled six squares, and almost have a bingo on one line, but I'm waiting for a recommended book to come in at the library. I can't wait to read it – it sounds really good! I'm in the middle of reading two fabulous books which will also fill another couple of squares. I don't know if you guys have heard about The Diviners series by Libba Bray, but I'm reading Book 3 right now and really enjoying it. It's a supernatural series set in post-WW1 New York, with a seriously diverse cast (like...THERE IS AN ACE CHARACTER. Who is awesome. And who gets to be a character first and the homoromantic ace reveal just sort of comes naturally once you get to know her and okay, honestly, it's worth reading just for that) and some genuinely spooky moments. I've been listening to the audiobook at night, but it's been keeping me awake because of how creepy it can be lol. The other book is a YA Fantasy novel called Finnikin of the Rock, which I'm also enjoying. It's so nice to have found some good books – I always have to go through so many duds before I find some good ones, so having two at once is a rare treat ^_^

I've finished one square and I am close to finishing two more. So that is exciting.

I was wondering if anyone had any book recs for the square horror. The problem is that I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to scary stories. So I would want a very mild horror story. If you guys know of any?

The Greatcoat by Helen Dunmore (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13111441-the-greatcoat) might be a good fit – it's short but atmospheric without being gory or anything. I'm not sure it exactly qualifies as horror (my library put it in the horror section, but to me it seems more Supernatural than anything), but it is a ghost story and there is some psychological horror-esque stuff, so YMMV. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and I am also a wuss who doesn't read scary stories XD

That is very exciting! Way to go!

I'd suggest maybe The Woman in Black by Susan Hill? I read it last year (well, listened to the audiobook) for the Halloween Bingo game at BookLikes. I found it spooky without being gory or anything like that. More of an old fashioned ghost story.

I'm not that fond of horror stories neither...

I was wondering if classical gothic fiction can match that square? Or I'll go for a wildcard with this one.

I've finished four books, and am very slowly working my way through another one (this may take a while, though, because it's huge!), but I've only actually filled three squares because one of the four books won't fit anything, and I'm saving the wild card for the bloody huge great big one.

I think I have the opposite of needing recs to fill squares - I have so many books on my to-read list that duplicate which category they fall into, so I have more than one option of which book to use to fill particular squares. For instance, three of the four books I've read so far are the Cormoran Strike novels by Robert Galbraith. Book 1 has filled the 'got turned into a tv series' square, book 3 is being used for the 'crime' square, but now I've used both those squares I have no other relevant square that I can fill with book 2, because they are all crime novels.

You do have two wildcards to use...unless you've already used one? And there's the free space, too.

It's so cool that you've been able to use a couple of books from one series in the game, though.

I filled 4 squares, and my 5th book is taking forever. It's good, it's just long. I think... it says 818 pages but like one I read at the end of last year I think the last lot of pages will be reference, bibliography and notes so it's only going to be sort of 750ish.

I already used my free square which I tried to save until later on, last year, but I just HAD to read the Witchfinder's Sister by Beth Underdown, and it wouldn't go anywhere else. I think I will definitely need those wild cards this year! I'd recommend that to anyone who likes historical fiction based around real people and events. I really enjoyed it.

I don't know what I'm looking forward to this year yet. I haven't really thought much further ahead than my current book. (Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow)

Nowhere near a bingo yet but I do have two lines with two squares filled. Filling that middle square gives a lot of opportunities!

I'm liking the idea of the wildcards more and more. It was an excellent suggestion.

I'm trying to hold on to them and the free square for a bit, too.

I definitely want to look into The Witchfinder's Sister. It sounds really good!

I've not had much luck so far this year. I started listening to an audiobook and got half way before I discovered... the rest of the discs were missing!!! I have been given a refund but I still don't know what happens!!! So I've downloaded the book on my Kindle. I also got back into a hardback Guardians of the Galaxy novel I've had for ages but again, it's not gripping me. So I've resorted to the latest Anne Cleeves novel, which I was hoping to get at a discount sometime, but with my luck in books so far this month I couldn't wait any longer! So hopefully that will bag me a square soon at least.

I've also started two other books but at the moment, I'm more tired due to my work and I read less... So we will see what happens in February!

I'm up to four so far and hoping to have finished the fifth by the end of the day. The first thing I did was go through my to be read pile and sort out ones that would fit the squares, so I guess I'm most excited about being able to finally clear some space in my room!
