Post March check-in...
Another month down...and another check-in post!

How's everyone doing?

Anyone close to a bingo yet? Have you filled any squares? If so, which ones? What books are you looking forward to reading in the coming months? Need any recs to fill a particular square? Have any recs to others?

For me, I've read a total of 14 books so far this year and have used 10 of them on the bingo card. I also just employed one of my wildcards, so I only have one of those left.

I also finally decided what book I want to read for the "Published the year you were born square," but I've got to figure out how to get my hands on it. (Do I want to buy it, request it for an inter-library loan, etc.)

I'm trying to decide what to read next, and there's so many things I want to read that I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to choose.

14 books?! Amazing. I'm on 3 and three quarters, lol.

Hm, yes, that is an intriguing square. I have ruled out The Exorcist (eek!), am considering Day of the Jackal, or Dragonquest (a Pern book), but have come across a rather nice looking anthology called World's Best Science Fiction 1971 which would be right up my street! Or maybe I'll just read Come Back, Amelia Bedilia, as she was a big fave when I was little, and I haven't read that one! :D
Good luck getting hold of yours!!

That's great, though. :D Congrats!

I could have gone with Carrie or Jaws among others, but ultimately decided on Poirot's Early Cases (or as it's known in the US Hercule Poirot's Early Cases), since I've been reading quite a bit of Dame Agatha lately. I managed to find a used copy (in "very good condition" they say) on amazon for $6.99. If the book description matches the one I bought, then it should be the actual 1974 edition. We'll see, lol.

I also chose an Agatha Christie novel for my Published the Year you were born. Sleeping Murder it is a Ms. Marple mystery and one of the books that was published posthumously. I haven't actually read a lot of Ms. Marple so I am looking forward to it.

I think I have read Poirot's Early Cases and liked it but they kind of run together for me. Congrats on the 14 books!

Can't beat a bit of Agatha Christie!
I don't know if I realised Jaws was a book first! I love that movie so much *g*
Wow, a proper 1974 version, that's a class way to do the square :)

Exactly! :D

I'll let you know when it gets here if it's the proper '74 version or not. It shipped out today, and they're estimating any time between the 9th and the 16th for delivery. I got it from a third party seller at amazon.

I've read about 23 books so far this year, 14 of which count for my bingo card--although I still haven't managed a complete bingo yet, lol. I haven't been reading much recently, though, so I need to get back to that if I want to fill in some more squares :)

You're doing fantastic! :D

I'm not close to a bingo, either. I have several rows with three squares filled, but nothing closer than that.

I have just finished up a couple of more books but I still have to make a post about them. So I would say I have finished six and I am concurrently reading three more books. Oops. I should probably buckle down and finish one of those next. lol

The one square I have absolutely no idea about is the "Don't judge a book by it's movie" I was trying to think of a bad movie I have seen so I could read the book but nothing has come to mind. Anyone have any ideas?

I am greatly enjoying the resurgence of reading I am doing this year. :D

I don't think it necessarily has to be a bad movie, does it? I did The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (what a mouthful) for that one bc the movie is coming out later this year (or is already out? Idk it hasn't been released here anyway). I wasn't much fussed about the book, but the movie looks really good.

(If you do want to watch a bad adaptation of a really good book, though, either Captain Corelli's Mandolin or The English Patient should suffice!)

It does not. It was just a silly name for the square based on a bookmark I have that says the same thing, lol.

It turns out it does not have to be a bad movie I was mistaken. Thanks for the recs!

It's great to have an incentive to read more, isn't it? Yay for book bingo :)
I was reading three at once there, good luck finishing them off!

Interesting about the book/movie square. I found this article that tries to add a degree of science to the mix, but I would say in general that it's a rare book that is worse than the movie :D Maybe this will give you some ideas!

It does not have to be a bad movie to qualify for that square. From our "The Squares Explained" thread:

Never Judge a Book by its Movie - If they've made a movie (no matter the quality of the movie) based on it, it's eligible for this square.

I used Death on the Nile for that square.

I'm glad you're having a reading resurgence! :D

Thanks so much for the info. In that case I have a couple of unread books on my bookshelf that would qualify. Death on the Nile is a good book and movie. Did you watch the movie as well?

No problem!

I have no yet watched Death on the Nile. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, though!

I'm up to 18 books read, 9 for the bingo card and I've just realised once I've finished Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the play square I'll have completed all four corners and the middle square!

Since last update I've done the Mystery/Crime, Sci-fi and and out of my comfort zone square (for which I chose a self-help book). I'm quite looking forward to starting Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies, one of my favourite authors, which fits the published the year I was born square.

I'm trying to figure out what I want to read for the out of my comfort zone square.

That was a hard square to figure out because there's not much I steer clear from.

I'm up to 9 books finished, but only 6 fill bingo squares. Nowhere near a bingo yet - they're scattered all over the place!

The good news is that over the Easter weekend I *finally* finished the huge great big academic book that I've been reading on and off since January. \o/ It was about homosexuality in ancient Greece, and was really interesting, but also really quite heavy going in places. Definitely a book that you have to be *really* into the subject matter to be able to read it.

Now I've finished that, I can get on with a few other non-fiction books that are going to fill a few squares. I can break off and read fiction when I'm slowly working through a long non-fiction book, but I can't read *two* non-fiction books at the same time.

And congrats on finishing the big academic book!

Nothing for me... March was an hectic month with a whole week in Barcelona, a two-day training and a lot of work... I've also bought the Nintendo Switch... So I've barely read a few short fics.

I've read very little the past few weeks. I need to just start myself and get back into it soon. I wanted to re-read the Patrick Melrose novels before the series starts but I may have to read along. i'll have a week between episodes anyway. So as long as i get maybe the first two out of the way it should be ok. My current book seems to be dragging. It's a mystery. Not sure where it's going just yet. Still a couple away from getting a bingo!
