2018 bookbingo review
As we're nearing the end of the year and the end of the bingo, why not look back on what we read this year!

  • What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?

  • What was the first square you filled?

  • Which book disappointed you the most?

  • Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill?

  • Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals?

What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?
- Fantasy/SF/UF/Supernatural Midnight Riot (https://bookheaven.livejournal.com/372808.html)

What was the first square you filled?Horror Maplecroft (https://bookheaven.livejournal.com/366526.html)

Which book disappointed you the most? AND Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill? The answer is the same for both of these - Biography or Autobiography The Complete Persepolis (https://bookheaven.livejournal.com/366767.html)

Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals? I do a lot of challenges. I did the Popsugar Challenge, read 50 books challenge and the literary challenge just to name a few. I achieved them all except for the literary challenge where you have to read a book set in all 50 states but I did pretty well. There were less than a half dozen states missing.

Wow that’s a lot of challenges! Great job. How fun to try to read a book from every state!

Wow, 50 books in 50 states, that seems a hard challenge!
I'm pondering taking the Popsugar challenge too in 2019 but as I just got back to reading regularly in 2018, I'm not sure I can manage it...

Congrats on meeting most of your book challenges! The 50 books in 50 states would be hard just to find that many books that you would want to read.

What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?
It's so hard to pick just one, but I think it was The Magicians by Lev Grossman.

What was the first square you filled?
One word title, with Room by Emma Donoghue.

Which book disappointed you the most?
Asylum by Madeleine Roux, for the Children's/YA square. Every time I read YA I'm quickly reminded why I don't read YA.

Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill?
Fanfic of at least 100k. I considered not filling this square but it was the last one i needed for a blackout. The problem was, there are no long fics in any of the small fandoms I'm in so I ended up rereading a fic from a larger fandom. M-RYS by mornmeril.

Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals?
I exceeded my Goodreads challenge goal of 75 books, by reading 82. I'll probably get to 84 by the end of the year. I also assigned myself extra reading to supplement my graduate studies, with books on language, literary criticism, and pedagogy.

I had the same problem with fanfic. I used one of my wildcards for that square.

Oh! Fun post! :D

What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?

Oh goodness, that's a tough choice. But how about Their Lost Daughters by Joy Ellis, and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Makenzi Lee.

What was the first square you filled?

TV tie-in/Turned into a TV show. I used The Mermaids Singing by Val McDermid (tv show: Wire in the Blood)

Which book disappointed you the most?

Hmmmm, most of the books that disappointed me this didn't make it on my bingo card. But of those that did, I'll go with The Mermaids Singing again. There was an animal death (that, thankfully wasn't as graphic as it could have been), and was very much a product of its time where certain attitudes were concerned. I rated it 3 stars, but would have probably went higher if not for those things.

Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill?

I used my wildcards on the fanfic and screenplay squares. I had the hardest time with my last square, which was the "out of your comfort zone" one. I ended up reading an erotica book for that square as that's a genre I don't really read.

Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals?

I did! I set goals originally of 50 books at both Goodreads and Booklikes. I ended up increasing those by five books on four different occasions until I got to 70 books. When I finished my last book for the bingo game, I also completed my challenges and read 70 books. I may possibly fit in one or two more before the end of the year.

What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge? This is hard. I've read so many good books this year. So how about a top three: The Tenant of Windfell Hall by Anne Bronte, Trail of Lightening by Rebecca Roanhorse, and Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.

What was the first square you filled? All Systems Red by Martha Wells (which was so good and I highly recommend)

Which book disappointed you the most? The book that disappointed me the most I did not read for the challenge, but among the books I read probably The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli only because they took a tongue in cheek approach to the concept of the book and I think if they had taken their own plot more seriously it would have been a really good story.

Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill? I used my wildcard for the screenplay square, so probably that one.

Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals? I didn't actually sign up for any other reading goals because I wasn't sure how much reading I would actually get done. I had had quite the dry spell the last couple of years, so I decided just to focus on getting a bingo so I was very surprised that I managed a blackout. lol

What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?
I liked most of the books I've read this year but I particularly liked "The Last Sun" by K.D. Edwards and I'm looking forward to the second volume coming in January!

What was the first square you filled?

One word title with "Origine" by Dan Brown

Which book disappointed you the most?
Numero Zero by Umberto Eco. I like "The Name of the Rose" so much that I had high expectations for another book by Eco... But that book was just bland and it took too long to really start.

Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill?
I used my wildcards on "Published the year you were born" and "poetry or play".
I won't fill: Fanfic, Published this year (even if I read 2018 published books but used them for other squares), script or screenplay.

Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals?
I did the Goodreads challenge with 25 books and fulfilled it two days ago!
But my main goal this year through this bingo was just to find joy in reading again... and I've achieved this one! So thanks to the mods for this wonderful challenge and to [livejournal.com profile] clea2011 for promoting this challenge!

  • What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?

Several of them scored well this year. I give stars out of 5 and the following ALL scored 5!)

The Ravenmaster by Christopher Skaife
Third Star by Vaughan Sivell
Star Trek Into Darkness by Alan Dean Foster
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Hamilton The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter
The Witchfinder's Sister by Beth Underdown

If I had to choose an overall favourite from those it would be The Ravenmaster. (but that might be because it's fresh in my mind.

  • What was the first square you filled?

Square 23 - A Classic - The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

  • Which book disappointed you the most?

The Doctor's Christmas Proposal by Eve Gaddy. A disappointing romance. (scored 2 out of 5. Slaughterhouse-Five also only scored 2 but I had no expectations of that one beforehand).

  • Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill?

I used two wildcards, one for the Fanfic of over 100k words square and one for the Diverse Reads square. Fanfic was definitely the hardest to fill as I haven't really kept up with any fandoms and haven't searched for any like I used to.

  • Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals?

I did. my objective was to get a blackout and I did it last night. My goodreads challenge was just 25 books as for the Book bingo so I achieved that.

You can find my posts about any of hte above books by using the links in my masterpost here

What was your favourite book amongst the ones you read for the challenge?

It's harder than I thought it would be to pick. In fiction I was really surprised by how much I loved The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. In non-fiction The Last Romantic: A Biography of Queen Marie of Roumania by Hannah Pakula was fascinating and hard to put down.

What was the first square you filled?
Comic or Graphic Novel - Rivers of London: Cry Fox #3

Which book disappointed you the most?
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two by Jack Thorne. Utter garbage.

Which square was the hardest to fill? Or which one didn't you fill?
I filled them all \o/ The hardest was probably the Out of Your Comfort Zone square because there aren't really that many genres that I would never consider reading. (I picked a self-help book in the end).

Did you set yourself other reading objectives this year? (Goodreads challenge for example) Did you achieve your goals?
I also set a goal on Goodreads of reading 100 books. I wasn't sure I was going to manage it but I've just finished my 100th :D
