The 2019 Bingo Squares explained.
If you have any questions regarding any square, or if a particular book will fit any square, please don't hesitate to ask either [livejournal.com profile] stellar_raven or myself ([livejournal.com profile] keli).

Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Paranormal - Books containing any of the following: magic, space, time travel, aliens, ufos, parallel universes, ghosts, etc.
Mystery/Crime/Thriller/True Crime - Mysterious death or a crime to be solved, etc.
Audiobook or Ebook - A CD recording of a reading of a book or an electronic version of a book.
Number or Color in the Title - Self-explanatory, with the reminder that for the numbers Regular/Cardinal numbers (one, two, three, etc.) and Ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) count for this square. Roman numerals count too (I, II, III).
Diverse Reads - We are going to follow the American Library Association and include books that recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.

Children's or YA book - Books geared towards the under 18 set.
Biography/Autobiography/Non-Fiction - Books based on facts, real events, and real people.
Historical (fiction or nonfiction) - Stories that are written to portray a time period or convey information about a specific time period or an historical event. Usually the event or time period is about 30 years in the past.
Set in your State/Country or Written by a Local Author - If you’re from Scotland, you’d read a book set in Scotland. If you are from the US you need to read a book set in the State you live in (Michigan, Arkansas, etc.).
Title Starts with the First Letter of Your Name - This refers to the first letter of your first name. You can use the first letter of your LJ username if you’d like. Also, you don't have to count "a, and, or the" at the beginning of a title.

Female Author - Self-explanatory.
One Word Title - Self-explanatory, but with the reminder that "The" counts as a word.
Free Space - Any book of your choosing.
Movie Tie-in/Turned into a Movie - This would be the place for any novels based on theatrical movies or those books that have been turned into movies (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, Lord of the Rings, etc.). These do not include TV movies.
Title is at least 6 words long - Self-explanatory. The title can include conjunctions (the, but, and, a, etc.).

Published this Year - 2019
Horror - Fiction whose purpose is to create feelings of fear, dread, repulsion, and terror in the reader.
Chosen Based on the Cover - No peeking at the contents of the book. Choose this book solely on how the cover makes you feel.
A Banned Book - Books or other printed works such as essays or plays which are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means.
A New-to-You Author - A book by an author that you have never read before.

Comic/Graphic Novel - Series of comic strips.
A book that is part of a series (4+books) - Self-explanatory.
TV Tie-in/Turned into a TV Show - This would be the place for any novels based on popular tv shows, or those books that have been turned into tv shows (Outlander, Game of Thrones, White Princess, etc).
Fairy Tale or Fairy Tale Retelling - A book involving fantastic forces and beings such as fairies, wizards, and goblins.
Cookbook or Food Memoir - A book containing recipes and other information about the preparation and cooking of food or an author’s experiences with food as told from his/her memories and imagination. For extra fun, post a pic of a recipe you tried from the book!

Great! I have two questions, just to be sure ;-)

For the fairytale one, does that include myths and legends or not?

For the banned book, does the book needs to be banned actually? Or can it be a book that has been banned? (like 1984 was banned in USSR under Staline). Or a book actually banned somewhere else in the world?

Stellar and I have talked about the myth and legends and at this time we are going to say that fairytales do not include them. Fairytales has its own genre and myth and legends fall under a different genre. If you have a hard time finding a fairytale or retelling of one, we can discuss further. :)

As for banned books, no they do not have to be currently banned. If they were banned at one point in time or banned by one group in particular they would count. Your example of 1984 is a perfect one.

Thanks for your great questions!

Thank you for these clarifications!

No problems for the fairytales! I haven't really thought about that square yet but I just wanted to know in which direction I could go!

Question about the cookbook square. Should one read the details of every recipe before it counts, rather than reading the name of the recipe, looking at the picture, deciding you'd never make it and moving on?!! o_O

That is an excellent question since this category is quite new to all of us. I am going to make a judgment call and say that as long as you skim all the recipes and get a good feel for the type of foods the book is trying to highlight that will be sufficient. For example, if the book is focused on vegan foods read enough of the recipes that you could actually convey to someone who isn’t vegan the type of the foods vegans eat. People write cookbooks to educate the public about food and as long as you learn something from them that will satisfy the square.

If anyone disagrees, please give me your arguments. :)

I think that's fair for this square. No need to thoroughly read every recipe, but skim them, read a few you might like to try. I am trying to do more cooking/baking so I might also make a couple of recipes and post photos!

In general do children's books count? Or is there a page number expectation?
(Reply) (Thread) (Link)
kelsrealm: Chris 3[personal profile] keli on January 6th, 2019 01:21 am (UTC)
Welcome!! If the children’s book fits in a category you can use it. However generally, we would like to discourage players from filling up their card with children's books that contain a few sentences a page. We have the children’s bingo square for that. YA books on the other hand are a different story though. They are usually the same size as most adult books and those you could essentially use to fill a card. I hope that answers your question. Thanks!

Thanks for explaining. And sorry I meant children's as in children's chapter books, like Artemis Fowl. There are some new one's coming out this year and I am wondering if I can use them?

Oh most definitely you can use those!! I’ve been wanting to read those myself. All those types of books are fair game. After a long day at work I love to come home to a good YA book. It’s relaxing.

Hi!

I have a question about the banned books' square. Do they need to be banned at this time and in the place you live? Because my country sure has a LOT of problems, but we haven't had banned books since 40 years ago when we were under a military dictatorship...
(Reply) (Thread) (Link)
kelsrealm: Chris 3[personal profile] keli on January 6th, 2019 08:01 pm (UTC)
Welcome Birggitt! No they do not have to be currently banned. If they were banned at one point in history or are/were banned by a particular entity (i.e., Harry Potter was banned by certain churches), then they will fit!

Question on categories!

Number or Color in the Title - Self-explanatory, with the reminder that for the numbers Regular/Cardinal numbers (one, two, three, etc.) and Ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) count for this square. Roman numerals count too (I, II, III).

Would having a color in another language in the title count?
The book I'm thinking of using for this category, is "Blanca and Roja" by Anne-Marie McLemore

Re banned books. I've just listened to Jeffrey Archer's Heads You Win for which he can't get a publisher in Russia (not surprising considering the plot). Technically it's not banned but in practice this was the case. Does it count?

[livejournal.com profile] keli and I discussed this, and I'm so sorry, but we're going to say it does not count. The books needs to have been actually banned somewhere at some point in time.

Again, I'm sorry.

for cookbook/food memoir, does this also include novels that have recipes in them? for example red sparrow by jason matthews.

edit: sorry! another question. for series, would a book from the world of lord of the rings count? or does it have to be a clear cut series, like books 1, 2, and so on.

Hello! Thanks for the questions!

[livejournal.com profile] keli and I have discussed this, and we're going to say that it does need to be a cookbook or food memoir as the focus of the book needs to be on the food, or the author's experiences with food (for a memoir).

For the series question, it does need to be a clear cut, numbered series with at least 4 books, so a book from the LotR world would not count.

Hope this helps!

(And a reminder that you do have two wildcards and two square substitutions to use, too, if you need them.)

I have a question about the comic/graphic novel category.

It specifically says novel. Does this mean it has to be fiction, or would a graphic memoir that is novel-length work? I'm about to read Marbles by Ellen Forney (https://www.amazon.com/Marbles-Depression-Michelangelo-Graphic-Memoir/dp/1592407323/) and wondering if I can count it for that square.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] keli.

The definition of "graphic novel" is generally a story that is presented in comic book format. These can be fiction or nonfiction.

for the prompt "Set in your State/Country or Written by a Local Author", would a canadian author count or would it have to be an author from my province?
