Thank you so much for posting this! I have a few of those books, and I've heard really good things about the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. I've been meaning to look into them.

Thank you! The first Temeraire book is great if you like a fish out of water story.

I have heard good things about Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell! There was a TV series too, wasn't there?

Farmer Giles is favourite. Love Neverwhere too.

My kids loved Diana Wynne-Jones and Cornelia Funke when they were.. well.. kids!

I saw the JSAMN series. It was good, but they changed the emphasis of the ending of the book apparently.

The Diana Wynne-Jones books are her adult ones. I liked 'Year of the Griffin' best, but I think it's the least well regarded, it was fun.

I didn't realise she wrote adult books. Might have to check those out.

If so, which are your favorites?

No, I'd still be reading the list now as I am slow! And some of them didn't appeal to me tbh when I looked further into them.

True true. Which have you liked so far?
It's hard to tell by titles. I've been wanting to read Neverwhere.. and Inkheart.

I the first 'Temeraire' book was great, used to like Pern books, liked Joan Aiken books as a little kid, Douglas Adams is good, Patrica C Wrede is a bit young, read all of the Anthony Villiers triology and there was too little tension in it for me but a nice respite from grim dark reading I'd imagine(!), Diane Wynne Jones is good, with 'Tough Guide to Fantasy Land' it helps if you've read some old school fantasy, but a Dark Lord is always a Dark Lord;p.

Didn't read Neverwhere, Inkheart, JSAMR as I've seen the screen versions and unless I really love something I feel like I've "done" it.

Tough Guide sounds interesting.

Done means you don't read books if you loved the movie?

Occasionally I'll read a book if I want more of the characters, but I don't usually get fannish about film characters.

I get that. I usually read books first but I prefer to watch action movies versus reading them.

Thanks for the list. The only books on it I've read is Sagan's Contact and several in the Pern series. If you're looking for more, I'd recommend anything by Jack McDevitt or Stephen R. Donaldson.

Thanks:) I haven't heard of Jack McDevitt, but I did read the Thomas Covenant books when I was in my teens.

Fantasy is my genre, with sci-fi up there as well. :D I could add tons of recs if it wasn't so late at night. Here's what I've got typed up from this and previous challenges.

Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher (actually, anything by her. pen name of Ursula Vernon)
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Anything by Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant
Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson (comic series)
Firefly Hollow by T.L. Haddix (romance with a fantasy angle)
Anything by Patricia Briggs
Fables by Bill Willingham (graphic novel series)
Anything by Jane Yolen
I've enjoyed everything I've read by Mercedes Lackey but somehow haven't read her most famous series
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Applejack! Those were the days...

Thanks for the all the suggestions!

I'd like to read Mercedes Lackey (talking animals:)) but I'm put off by rape scenes.

They're releasing the G1 ponies again; I need Applejack and will be grabbing her and the Year 3 Rainbow Ponies as soon as they hit Target. :D

It's really amazing that I've never picked up the books about telepathic horses but here we are. I *do* like her Elemental Magic series; Air/Earth/Fire/Water in Edwardian England, originally centered around fairy tales. The Serpent's Shadow is the first in the series, and is Snow White. I don't recall it having any rape scenes, although a child prostitute is sacrificed. There is a scene of the main character getting grabbed/groped; I'm not sure if that would be too much for you.

The Black Gryphon is pure fantasy, and again, I don't recall it having rape scenes. It's been awhile since I read any of them. The Black Swan does have at least one rape scene.

Woo! Chunky ponies again:)

Thanks for clarification on the Mercedes Lackey books. The Valdemar series ones are the ones that appealed to me until the reviews put me off.

Anything by T. Kingfisher I highly recommend.

Urban fantasy is my favorite genre when done right and the Toby Daye series by Seanan McGuire (first is Rosemary and Rue) and the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (Moon Called) are the two series I immediately buy the day they come out. Fae and werewolves, respectively, with more romance in latter.

I read the blurbs and they sound interesting.
It reminds of Gail Carriger. She does steampunk with werewolves and vampires plus other creatures. I'm counting down to the next book release this year. <3
