Post August check-in

It's been a while since we did a check-in post so I thought I would bring it back!

How's everyone doing on their bingo card?  Did you get a bingo? Which squares, if any, did you fill this past month? Which books are you looking forward to reading? Do you need any recs to fill a particular square? Have any recs for others?

I read 9 books in August, but only one for the bingo - Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany for the one word title square. Filling it got me my second bingo, across the middle.

This month I plan on filling the Turned into a TV Show square with The Magician King by Lev Grossman, and using a wild card for the cookbook square with Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.

The Magician King is next in my Audible To Read list. I already used something else for that square, though.

I'm really enjoying it. So far it's just as good as the first book.

9 books in August?! That's almost as many as I've read *all year*!! :-)

I've been reading a lot but my books aren't meeting the categories. At least I'm reading!

This is totally me. The squares I have left are not my usual thing and I haven't been inspired/motivated yet to break out of my comfort zone.

I've filled 13 squares so far this year, which is a huge increase for me on the pathetic 4 I managed last year. I haven't managed a line yet. I have two more on my kindle to read (the Handmaid's tale was on 99p kindle last week so finally getting to read that) and a cookbook that i'm going to buy and read so yes, actually doing well this year for once! I've just been reading fanfic for years.

I finished 8 books in August, but only one for this challenge: The Forest Queen by Betsy Cornwell.

Only two squares still open on my card, one of which I'm currently working on. I'm slowly working my way through Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspook for the Cookbook or Food Memoir square. (It talks about more than just food - like general entertaining/hosting - but I'm using it anyway. Already found one recipe I can't wait to try.)

I’m going okay. I managed to get a bingo at the end of July, but I’ve only read a few books in August so no bingo for last month. Real life has been busy and placement as been stressful so I’m not reading as much as I was but I’m working on that.

Interestingly enough all the books I’ve read lately have been YA. I just read two books by an Australian author Claire Zorn, which were really good.

I have one square left. And a book for it. I just need to motivate myself to read past the first two pages (it will get more interesting). If I haven't read it by December I will be a lot more motivated!

I'm doing well. I've filled 17 squares, but still only have one bingo. I've read a total of 44 books for the whole year as well.

44 books this year?! Go you!! :-)

In January I did set myself a vague target of 40 books (i managed 33 last year so it didn't seem an unfeasible number), but it's now September and I'm only on book 13, so it's looking pretty unlikely at this point.

Lol, I know that feeling. I've filled 10 squares but only posted reviews for five of them.

Well done on filling all the squares!

I'm 7.5 books away from my fourth blackout. Last month I did fantasy, mystery, kids, new author and series mostly. I'm actually enjoying the book I'm reading right now, The Gilded Wolves. It's a change of voice for Chokshi and I'm enjoying Forged Paris. It's a surprise historical fiction. ;p

I think the best books to recommend so far this year would be Reticence, The Winter of the Witch, the Crazy Rich Asian series and the Trials of Apollo series. Gail Carriger is settling into becoming one of my new favorite authors. :3

I'm not doing so well this year, I've only read twelve books so far, currently reading number 13, but only filled 10 squares on the card. Still no sign of a bingo either. I've got a few options where there are three on a row, but this year I'm reading whatever I'm in the mood for, rather than reading to fill specific squares and chase bingos. This is supposed to be fun, right? :-)

I'm not giving up on getting a blackout, but to be honest I might struggle a bit this year. I'm hopeful for a couple of bingos, at least, even if I don't get a blackout.

I'm so far behind this year it's not even funny. I think i'm on 6 books.... I do have a coupe of audiobooks to add to my card though. I have been listening more than reading lately which is unusual for me.

I have filled 25 squares so far, and I have books lined up for two other squares, so I am doing really good. The only problem I am having is finding a book with a title that starts with the first letter of my name. The first letter of my first name is R, and it doesn't seem to be popular for authors to title their books with R words.

R is a tough one. If you like sci-fi, check out Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It's one of my favorite books. As is Rat Bohemia by Sarah Schulman. Room by Emma Donoghue is another great one.

If all else fails I'd say pick a book that starts with "The R---" which is probably more common. Like The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall.
