Check in time!

Reading a comment from [livejournal.com profile] vysila reminded me that January has blown by and I didn't put up a post to check in! How are you all feeling? I hope January treated you well! Just an update from [livejournal.com profile] stellar_raven, one of my partners in crime here. She's just moved into her new house and it will be another week before she gets internet. She will be back with us soon!

According to Goodreads, I'm five books behind schedule. Haha.

I'm currently attempting to read The Final Girls Support Group by Grady Hendrix again. I abandoned it last year.

So far, so good. Everything has been enjoyable.

Recs: Stone Cross by Marc Cameron. Smoke Eaters by Sean Grigsby. The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly.

Not yet this year.

Depending on the book and the time frame, sure.

*glances at some of the questionable books I've read over the years*

Too much, my friend. Too. Much.

~Newbie waves hello~

On track.

I started reading Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series in early January and managed to finish the first three books by month's end. Being retired has definite perks, including more time to read.

Delighted with the series so far. These are dense fantasy books, far more comprehensive than the TV series on Amazon Prime. I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys fantasy.

No warnings, and I might be interested in a group read at some point, but I have 15 WoT books to get through first!

Those books are on my radar but the number and complexity of them puts them faaaar down on my list for now.

Welcome!

They're the only books I'm reading right now, for that exact reason. Hope you get to them at some point, because they really are fabulous.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?

I’ve managed to read 3 books in January which is good. I’m making good progress so far (I’m not back at uni yet so we’ll see what happens…)

↬ What are you reading?

I’m currently reading the 4th book in the Bridgerton series which is Romancing Mr Bridgerton. I like it so far because I love Penelope.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?

Yes I’ve been happy so far — I’ve been in a romance mood and reading short novels that don’t have complicated plots.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along?

Not at the moment.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?

Not so far luckily.

Also bonus question:

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?

Possibly depending on my schedule.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?

Doing pretty well with six books under my belt. My personal goal is sixty for the year.

↬ What are you reading?

Right now I'm working on two: Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Nightmare Country by Marlys Millhiser.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?

Mostly happy. Right now I'm really liking the first book, not so sure about the second, which I only started a couple of days ago.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along?

The High House by Jessie Greengrass.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?

Not really. Those I tend to weed out by carefully reading reviews.

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?

Like a book club? That might be interesting.

Wow six books already?! That's great!

I will have to check out the Doris Kearns Goodwin book. She's always a good read.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?
I'm on book 15 at the moment, and I believe 7 of those have been usable for this challenge, so all good for me.

↬ What are you reading?
I'm currently reading "Rural Diaries" by Hilarie Burton Morgan. I'm really enjoying it.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?
I'm doing well. I consider 3 to be "okay", 4 to be "good" and 5 to be "outstanding", and so far I only have 3 books that are 2 stars. So that's a pretty good record.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along?
I really loved "Stillhouse Lake" by Rachel Caine. It features a strong heroine and an interesting plotline.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?
Well, I hated "The Guersney Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" because IMO it's a bunch of anecdotes that are told, not shown, but I am squarely in the minority in that opinion.

Also bonus question:

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?
Depending on the book, absolutely.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)? Yes I am actually ahead of where I thought I would be

↬ What are you reading? Midnight at Malabar House by Vaseem Khan & The Zig-Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far? So far I have been lucky I have enjoyed most of my books.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along? I just finished Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. It was so good. I highly recommend any books she has written.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings? I read a really bad book called Token Huntress, it was on sale and an impulse buy only finished it through sheer stubbornness.

Also bonus question:

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future? Depending on the book I think it would be a lot of fun.

Yay for being ahead!

I think a group read would be fun too, if we can all agree on a book. I'll make a post in the future asking for suggestions and votes. :)

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?
Not really, I was hoping to try and read at least one book per month 🤦‍♀️

↬ What are you reading?
Do books with pictures count? And comics 😹
That’s about all I have the time to read these days 🤦‍♀️

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?
I’m happy with my first book, it was awesome!
I’m looking forward to my second book, just gotta make time to sit and read it 🐱

↬ Any recommendations to pass along?
Not really, I’m not really at the book level of most people on here 📚

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?
Just one, but I’m not emotionally in a good place to think about it enough to try and remember it’s name, that will upset me again 😕😞😿

Also bonus question:

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?
What book would it be?

kelsrealm: ACNH: Poppy[personal profile] keli on February 10th, 2022 03:01 pm (UTC)
You're reading that is all that matters. Picture books and comics totally count.

Not sure on the group read. Was just throwing out feelers. If we do look to do one, we would get book suggestions and vote on it as a group. :)

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?
I didn't actually set a target. I just want to read some of the books DJ collected over the years and I have never read. I read quite slowly, so I have only got four reviews written and I've not actually posted any of them to my LJ yet.

↬ What are you reading?
I just finished Altered Carbon, by Richard Morgan. I need to select another for when I go to bed tonight.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?
I'd say it was mixed. Nothing awful, a couple of so-so and one good. To paraphrase, one out of four's not bad.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along?
Not particularly.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?
No. But if a book was that bad, I wouldn't read it beyond the first few pages.

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?
It would depend on the book.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?
My personal goal for the year is 30 books, so not much more then this alphabet bingo, but I am on track for both actually (8 books by February 11), although I'm not using every single book I've read so far in the alphabet bingo (unless I need to in the end).

But I'm doing more than I have in years for reading books per month so I'm pretty satisfied.

↬ What are you reading?
Genre-wise: Rom-coms basically. Or like Paranormal type stuff.

I'm currently reading How to Love Your Neighbor by Sophie Sullivan. I did pause my reading of Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer to read it, which I paused reading Hunting November by Adriana Mather to read it.... so, kinda in between three books right now, lol.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?
Pretty good! There was only one so far this year that I was kinda iffy on, which is Reaped by H.D. Gordon (it's micro story that just lack luster, I liked the premise). Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey has weird sex scenes but other than that I actually liked the story.

Definitely Recommending: Satisfied Guaranteed by Karelia Stetz-Waters and I Kissed A Girl by Jennet Alexander

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?
I personally hated Huckleberry Finn as a child so that one, I refuse to go near it.

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?
Probably not, my schedule is very weird.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)?
Goodreads says that I'm 2 behind, which I blame on having to work from home again for 5 weeks. Most of my books are audio and I barely drove anywhere during those 5 weeks. Also, when I was home I tended to catch up on streaming shows during downtime instead of listening to my book like I do in the office. Also, I've been reading fanfic before bed instead of a book lately.

↬ What are you reading?
Just finished Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron.
Will be starting Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory later today.

I try to focus on black authors during Black History Month.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far?
I've enjoyed everything I've read so far this year.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along?
The newest Wayward Children book by Seanan McGuire was very intriguing. Can't wait for the next one, hoping she continues to explore what happened in Where the Drowned Girls Go more.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings?
Not yet this year.

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future?
Not me. I find group reads too much pressure to read in a timely fashion.

↬ Are you on track (your own personal one)? — On track for Goodreads and also LJ Book Bingo.

↬ What are you reading? — Not reading anything at the moment. Need to finish James Clear's Atomic Habits but taking a reading break for a few days.

↬ How happy are you with your selections so far? — So far so good. Got some good ones lined up too.

↬ Any recommendations to pass along? — 'Where the Crawdads Sing' by Delia Owens. Loved it.

↬ Any "don't touch with a ten foot pole" warnings? — None so far.

Also bonus question:

↬ Would anyone be interested in a group read sometime in the future? — Definintely. (Atomic Habits mentioned above is kind of a group read with the Dog trainers I work with. We're not specfically reading it together but have set a date when we'll do a Zoom call and discuss it. )

Crawdads was such a good book. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

Cool, maybe we can put up a poll and vote on a book for a future read.
